Empty legs, also known empty flights, repositioning flights and ferry flights, in private aviation are one-way flights that occur when the aircraft needs to be repositioned at another airfield to pick up passengers or must return to the base airport. These flights would be flown without passengers, except that such flights are made available to private jet travelers at discounted rates that can be up to 50% less than standard private flights.  

While private jet charter and private jet membership are reliable flights, empty legs typically involve schedule and price fluctuations and may only be used when the traveler has flexibility in their travel agenda.  

In both cases, private jet charter and empty legs, the traveler hires the whole aircraft. Whether there is a single traveler or a group of 6-8 passengers, plus perhaps a dog and luggage, the cost of the aircraft remains the same; the chartered aircraft is not priced per passenger.
